Natural patterns

I had my tripod all set up to catch a tui but two birds went into the neighbours silver dollar tree (eucalyptus cinerea). I missed the birds but found this wonderful natural pattern of branches and is it flowers or nuts or something?
I had my settings ready to do a shallow depth of field behind the tui which was what I was trying to practice but not today.
