Primo fagotto

Posing for today's blip is our very own primo fagotto, or, amazingly talented first bassoonist, Karla L. (in most every orchestral score, the bassoon will be referenced by its Italian name, fagotto. The word bassoon comes from the French 'basson')

After this past weekend's wonderful bassoon experience at Assumption Church, I listened extra carefully to the bassoon parts at rehearsal this evening. Very often, cello and bassoon are playing the same notes and the range of both instruments has a lot of overlap.

The bassoon is considered the bass member of the oboe family and like the oboe, it is a double-reed instrument. I've been informed that the bassoon is not an easy instrument to play, but oh, how I love its deep, rich, yet somewhat plaintive tone. Here's another tune written by a young 18 year old Mozart, Bassoon Concerto in Bb Major.
