Montserrat's abandoned houses

After the major volcanic eruption of 1997 there was an exclusion zone up to the Belham river. Many houses in the Foxes bay area were abandoned and have spent the last nearly 20 years slowly decaying (even though this area is now accessible again). We had a look at this one. It was a very eerie and sobering experience as the people literally left with only their clothes. Bills, diaries and other personal items were left behind.

This is on the path over the headland to Foxes bay - we were going to try for a snorkel but missed the path and ended up on an acacia trek. We were also drenched by the afternoon shower - Kathy was pouring water out of her boots. Luckily it's 28 degrees :-) It was a good walk however and we listened out for the birds.

In the evening the group went for dinner at Marriet's Gourmet Gardens in Salem - an excellent little restaurant. The Carribean Pork was aromatic and soft, and the salads were a welcome relief from our slightly carb heavy diet, A very relaxing Sunday. Curtis and Hazel skipped their way back down the road (!).
