Mackintosh Frieze at the Glasgow Art Club

Today I had the opportunity to view the recently completed Mackintosh frieze at the Glasgow Art Club, as I had lunch with Donald Macaskill.

The Art Club has undergone a major refurbishment and the frieze was the last part of the restoration work. Artist Chris Allan recreated the Mackintosh stencils and John Nevin carried out the application of the frieze design to the gallery walls.

When Charles Rennie Mackintosh was 25, he stencilled the wall frieze, but as the years passed by, the work became unfashionable and was damaged by water so it was covered up by plaster.

In June 1893 an illustration in “The Baillie” Cartoon Supplement showed Mackintosh’s designs for the decorative frieze for the gallery in the club – described by Sir Kenneth Clark as “one of the finest small galleries in Europe”!

Tonight I attended a special event at the Lighthouse to celebrate its 15th birthday.

Working flat out at the moment, so very little time to comment on your blips.
