Trying to Help

I met these young men in the state capital today. They were trying to bring awareness to the recent grand jury decision in the Michael Brown case in Ferguson, MO. Xavier, Eric and Greg (from left to right) were quick to tell me that they believe something in this country needs to change. "This is not a race thing," Greg said. Xavier and Eric echoed Greg, "It's not a race thing." They explained that they believe a police badge means you are a public servant, sworn to help everyone, not hurt anyone. "Me and you, we'd be in jail if we killed someone," Eric said. "But this officer, he's free after he killed Michael Brown."

I asked what they wanted to achieve by their actions today. "We're just people trying to help other people understand that something has to change in this country." Today these three young men helped me to better understand that, indeed, something does need to change in this country. Thank you, guys.
