Beam me up...?!!

This is the rather sci-fi lift shaft (or "elevator" for our North American friends!) in the clock tower in Prague Old Town Square (the tower also boasts a fascinating astronomical clock).

The lift shaft is somehow incongruous (in that it's situated in a clock tower which was built in 1338!) but it actually won an award for best design in 1999, and somehow its design works harmoniously within the stony surroundings. It is quite amazing how they have fitted it in; the lift car is like a cylindrical glass capsule which goes up & down within this helical metal shaft. It is great in that it even provides wheelchair access to the observation deck, quite a feat in such an old building.

I had loads of other possible blips today as Prague is such a photogenic place, but this one won in the end for being so unusual. We're a bit busy now packing up for going home tomorrow but I'll put some more photos on Flickr tomorrow and add a link here...Here it is now!
