Church Hill, Midhurst

This is the curve in the road at the top of Church Hill going into Knockhundred Row. The address of the cottages on the left is properly 3 and 4 Knockhundred Row, Grade II listed. It dates back to at least the 17th Century with most likely earlier origins. Mostly rebuilt with brick and stone infill to the timbers.

The pink building in the distance is the historic Knockhundred Market, now housing the Museum and an olde worlde tea shoppe. The yellow house is Burgage House. Burgage was a 13thC anglo-french term for a property occupied by payment of rent or some sort of service to the King or Lord of the Manor. I think there was a vote attached to the property, a desirable commodity when not everyone was entitled to a vote.

This is part of the Old Town where almost all of the buildings are listed by English Heritage as being of special historic or architectural interest.
