Life in Newburgh on Ythan

What have we here?

Neolithic recumbent stone circles are a unique feature of the Aberdeenshire landscape. Now some 5000 years old, they are circles of upright stones in which the 2 tallest stones, always on the SW arc, flank a massive slab set on its side (the recumbent) and wedged so that the top edge is level. The recumbent and its flankers framed the moon as it set or rose in the southern sky. They are believed to have served as ritual centres that allowed stone-age farmers to make lunar observations to establish seasonal calendars.

I pass by these stones most days and often wonder if they are the remains of a small recumbent circle. They don't feature on any map or database of archaeological sites. On the other hand they do resemble a recumbent stone with one of its flankers in situ, and they do face South West! My head tells me that they can't possibly be an undiscovered circle and are probably just old gate posts. My heart on the other hand is convinced that ancient rituals once took place on this spot!
