Wrocław: "The Anonymous Pedestrians"

We are now in Silesia. (The city of Wrocław was known as Breslau under Austrian/Prussian/German rule. Its first recorded name was Wrotizlava.)

If you walk from Wrocław's central station to the town's centre, you will pass - but perhaps not notice - these bronze statues.

The installation was assembled in the middle of the night of 13 December 2005 to mark the 24th anniversary of the declaration by General Jaruzelski of martial law in Poland. Many thousands of Poles had been arrested by the militia (or "gone underground") and 100 or more were killed by the regime.
