The Edge of the Wold

Heron and Heysham

We have had so many cloudy days recently, but today was different. The sun shone all day, and it was as mild as Spring. After a few hours working in the garden, Gus and I went for our afternoon walk over the Knott and down to Far Arnside - just as we did last Sunday. The heron waited for the sun to set and the parties of noisy walkers to pass before appearing on the water in front of us. As we watched, the tide was filling the bay with water, a redshank was feeding to the left and further up the channel a curlew was bubbling.

I didn't want to leave. After this, the sky flushed salmon pink, while on the horizon where the sun had set the sky was vivid scarlet. Even when we left, the whole bay was glowing with yellowish light.

We stumbled home through the dark woods, lit dimly by the moon with tawny owls hooting. What a beautiful day.

We came home to the smell of the Christmas cake cooking. Wifie has been very industrious.
