Big Baby

When the sliding door slid open at 11.54
and I saw it sitting there on Jill’s swivel chair
things began to add up: the baby talk
at the end of the phone when I called
to query the figures that didn’t add up,
the milk stains on the spreadsheets,
the request for maternity leave
a few months ago that I thought was a joke.
And how tired she’s been looking lately
when I’ve bumped into her in the corridor.
And, come to think about it,
she did put on quite a bit of weight.
I took care not to mention that. And smoke?
Didn’t Jill used to smoke?
