Rees Street

There is a statue of a Mr William Rees, the man charged with founding Queenstown as we know it, in the town centre. Here he is with a sheep by his side, not that he had sheep for long before the gold rush started. You can find out more about him here. Although there is no indication of how well he got on with any locals that may have been around.

Interesting to see how Europeans have imposed their version of history on this country, it has fascinated me since I went on a small tour with a friend shortly after arriving in Auckland. There were many battle sites barely signposted and without much description of their historical significance, however there were also a lot with very informative signs and great signage from the road. The only difference I could see was that Europeans had won battles at the well signed destinations.
