The fool on the hill

Crank it up

In the spring of 1978 I was a spotty youth visiting Chester. I went into WH Smiths. I saw this book and had to buy it. I guess you’d call it a lightbulb moment. The book makes a prediction: “Hang gliders will be commonplace by the year 2000. They will be the bicycles of the air. People who today regard the sport’s enthusiasts as cranks will, twenty years from now, be accustomed to seeing them pass overhead…”
If pushed I’d probably own up to being a crank. Predictions are rarely accurate.
