Finnish Independence Day

Finland celebrates 97 years of independence today.

For Finns, Independence Day is not a time for fireworks and jubilation, but for serious reflection and gratitude for those who fought to keep Finland a united and sovereign nation.

About 2,000 guests are invited to the Presidential Reception every year (it is the number one TV event of the year). In the picture is hubby's aunt who is escorting her aunt. She served as Lotta, volunteer social worker, in the war. (As did my and hubby's grandmothers too.) They are just greeting the president and president's spouse.

Reasons never to leave Finland.
