Remains of Blackadder House

The bad weather forecast for this morning failed to happen, and we had a very pleasant morning walk from Blackadder North Lodge in sunshine. We carried on a little further than usual, to see for ourselves the remains of part of Blackadder House on the other side of Blackadder Water.

Once a fabulous house, it was used by troops for accommodation during WWI. They vandalised house, destroying many of the wooden features for firewood. Unfortunately, after the war the government didn't pay to repair the damage and the house was later demolished.

On the bank of the river (the building with the two rectangular windows) are the remains of the hydro-electric power house - Blackadder House was reputedly the first in Berwickshire to have electric lighting.

After our walk, tea and crumpets by the fire before an afternoon working in the garden.
