The End of Hope

At one end of Hope Street is the Anglican cathedral at the other is this building, the (Roman Catholic) Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd winner of an international architectural competition.

Originally a design by Sir Edwin Lutyens was commissioned, but rising costs meant that only the crypt was completed. The original design would have undoubtedly been Lutyens' greatest work and I think can be justifiably be described as the greatest building never built.

If you're ever in Liverpool, a visit to the crypt is a must.
