Doune Castle

The next few days we are having a short break at Kenmore in Perthshire.

On the way up to Kenmore we stopped off in Doune to have lunch at the Buttercup Cafe. A delightful little cafe which has won awards for its sandwiches! I would thoroughly recommend the Scandinavian Club Sandwich. It was delicious.

After lunch we made our way to Doune Castle. Built for the Regent Albany, it is a magnificent late 14th century courtyard castle. It was freezing walking round to the castle.

Doune Castle has been used in a number films. It appears numerous times in Monty Python and the Holy Grail notably as Camelot, the Castle of Guy de Lombard (with Trojan Rabbit), Swamp Castle where Sir Lancelot causes chaos at the wedding, and Castle Anthrax where Sir Galahad has an interesting offer!

The castle is currently being used for Outlander, a new US TV fantasy series set in Scotland. The first 8 episodes of this series have already been shown in the US. Since filming commenced the castle has been welcoming droves of American devotees of Outlander, the show dubbed Scotland’s answer to “Game of Thrones,” after it was chosen as the main outdoor location for the show, standing in for fictional Castle Leoch at the time of the Jacobite Rebellion.
