Winter lighting at Barns Ness

We have not been to Barns Ness to walk the dogs for a month or so as we thought the council had brought in sheep for winter grazing. However, hearing on the grapevine (the vet’s receptionist) that the sheep had not arrived we decided to revisit one of our regular haunts. It was cold but nice a bright with that lovely low raking December sun which adds such texture to the landscape. It was picking out the contours of the rocky beach and adding a warm glow to the sandstone rocks.. I spent half an hour or more wandering round the rock pools. The only problems were that if you were shooting towards the sun it was almost impossible to avoid flare and shooting the opposite direction you had to be careful to avoid the obvious photographer’s long shadow. I’ve chosen one that is a wonderful amalgam of all the beach elements – craggy and sandstone rocks. glistening seaweed and of course the obligatory Barns Ness Lighthouse in the distance. Normally this beach can look quite drab but the winter lighting has brought it alive.
