Autumn Crocus

They come up in spring with the daffodils, producing large tulip-type leaves that grow and grow. Just when you think they must have a flower soon they die away. And so they sleep...

Then in autumn, out of the ruins of the perennial garden they push up these big, beautiful flowers on long, leafless stems. Even when I'm watching for them they always surprise me.

You might like to look at them in large.
