Peter Gurney's Grave

This is a well known landmark in Neen Sollars. When we first moved here in 1991 we could see it clearly from our bedroom window but now it is obscured by trees that have grown up on the old railway embankment and we can only see it in winter when the leaves have dropped. I had to walk in the field to the front of our house where the old cider apple orchard is to take this picture.

The actual grave is on the left before the hill starts sloping down where the dark pine trees are. There was a tractor working in the field at the time I took this picture.

You may wonder why Peter Gurney was buried there...
His family owned the nearby Shakenhurst Estate. He died in his fifties, quite young. His heart broken mother had him buried there as it was his favourite place to be - local gossip is that this is where he took his girlfriends as he was known to be a bit of a Casanova. His mother is now buried there too. It is consecrated ground and fenced off.

It's a great walk / ride getting up there and the views from up there are spectacular.
