Stenness Hills

This is looking south toward Scapa Flow from another of Orkney's 'Ward Hills'.

They were the officially designated sites of fiery beacons in time of celebration or danger. I noticed that the next hill, Mid Hill, was actually higher, but the top can't really be seen by the land to the south. I'd walked up Bigswell Road to an old quarry, then used old peat-diggers tracks to go up Mid Hill, then Ward.

Weather was strange, sunny periods with hail and flurries of snow and a very chill wind. 'Hail Caledonia, stern and wild', indeed.
I've posted other images here.
