An Iconic Building

This is the Royal Liver Building [Liver is pronounced to rhyme with diver] was design by W A Thomas and opened in 1911. It was commissioned in 1890 as the new home of the The Royal Liver Friendly Society one of the world's largest insurance and financial services companies.

It's interesting to note that a large part of the San Francisco earthquake insurance claims were settled by Liverpool insurance companies.

Although insurance is still big business in the city, takeovers, mergers and the British tendency to concentrate all financial services in the City of London mean that Liverpool is no longer preeminent in insurance.
