Day 9 - Sonzay to Caen, and then home...

Alas time to leave the gite - cleaning done, car packed (and decidedly weighed down by a certain liquid in glass bottles), waved our goodbyes to the owner Jerome (a fine name...).

Up towards Le Mans (resisting the temptation to give the Golf a spin on the track), onto the toll motorway and soon got to Normandy. Stocked up some more wine at the hypermarket (well we had to spend our returned deposit on something) - the cashier not batting an eyelid at the 20+ bottles clunking in our trolley - probably thought it's enough to get us through le weekend.

Onwards to Caen and finally arrived at the coast where we had lunch at a bistro on 'Sword Beach' - one of the locations for the Normandy landings. Quite moving to read the details on info boards and look at the memorial. Odd that it really wasn't that long ago that so many died, yet now (thankfully) families play in the same place on a gloriously sunny day.

Lunch finished (another bargain set lunch), we drove back along the coast to the port, joined the rows of cars, and were soon onto the ferry for the six hour trip back to the UK.

Super week - rest, good food, very good wine, and sunny every day.
