The rainbow bird and the girl

Story as narrated to Mummy:

"The little girl met a witch, but it was a kind witch. And the witch said to the girl that there was a rainbow bird living in the forest. So, she went to the forest and she found the rainbow bird and the rainbow bird looked down at the little girl and the little girl looked up and saw the lovely bird. So, she got out and remembered the magic words from the witch that the witch had told her and she said the magic words and as soon as she said that, there was a bright big golden cage and the rainbow bird flew down into the cage where there was a nest. And, the rainbow bird laid a rainbow egg and the rainbow egg cracked and there was a rainbow chick. Then, the rainbow chick began to sing a little song and the song was a magic song. And, the little girl brought it back to the witch and the witch saw the magic bird with the rainbow chick that sang the rainbow song and when she had showed the witch, the good witch put it up on a shelf. And then, she put the goldfish (she had a goldfish) in front of the magic birds and when she had put the goldfish there, they began to sing the lovely song again.

And then, the little girl said 'what next?' and then the witch said 'now we must go to fetch the golden leaves'. So, the nice witch went with the girl and with the witch leading the way they managed to get to the golden root tree. As soon as they looked up, a golden coconut fell down and they bought the golden coconut and the three gold leaves home to their castled. When they had done that, they put the coconut in the birds' cage and the birds began to sing again. And, they put the leaves in there. And they began to sing another lovely cheerful song.

When they were walking the next morning, they met another strange, weird stranger. And, when they were passing that stranger, the stranger said 'hey, come over here!', and when he had said that they came over to him and said 'we're looking in the wood, we've just come over from our castle to go for a nice walk in the wood'. And, when they had past the stranger they met an old woman. The old woman said, 'if you go down that path you would find a little hole in the tree and if one of you goes inside the hole - you'll just fit, either of you'. And they went, carrying on, following the old woman's instructions. And, when they had found that tree with the hole in, the little girl squeezed herself in and when she had got in, she found what was inside. And what was inside was another strange little mouse! But, they wondered, 'what would this mouse do if we took it home?'. and they remembered the old woman saying that if you brought it home you would find that the mouse had some rainbow cheese at home. And, when they got home they saw the rainbow cheese and they looked at it with their eyes staring wide. And, they looked up at the ceiling as the old woman had said they had to look up at the ceiling because the old woman had said they would find something. What they had found was that living on the roof was another mouse and the other mouse was a girl. And she had children. There was 8 children and they all loved playing in the front garden but their mother said 'not to go out the gate because you may fall, don't go out without me'. And so, one day...
