Making Charcoal!

The weather has been so good lately.I thought we should start making charcoal ready for a fantastic summer and what happens it rains!

The charcoal is made by filling this small portable kiln with wood and then lighting a fire at the base of the kiln.Charcoal is made when the wood is heated under conditions where there is insufficient air for complete combustion. In this process the water contained in the wood is first driven off before the wood begins to break down. A series of chemical reactions then follow which result in the release of volatile products. Charcoal a solid black residue is left.

Why should you use locally produced charcoal? (This is the sales pitch! LoL)

Is much easier to light than imported briquettes and lumpwoods

Does not require lighter fuel so there are no fumes or taints

Does not have to be flown or shipped around the world

Helps protect woodland through good ongoing management

I could go on !!!!!!!

Lets just hope for a good summer that would be a good start!
