water

I'm thinking of Hurricane Katrina today, almost exactly two years after it hit New Orleans. The helplessness of the people, the immense power of water, the things we take for granted, the incredible non-response of the government.

I know people who were born in New Orleans, and the old city is always described with a tinge of magic, a place where you could reach out and touch the atmosphere, where the very streets sang their history. I've never been to the States, let alone New Orleans, so my vision of the place, coloured by the stories of my friends, is of this imaginary lost world which, one day, may yet appear as it once was.
