Coast Redwood Forest

As promised in one of my recent blips (oak woodland), I am providing a photo of another ecosystem in California - the Coast Redwood Forest. These are young coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) with big leaf maple (Acer Macrophyllum) highlighted in the foreground.

The location for this photograph is a little more than a kilometer from the epicenter of the Loma Prieta earthquake that struck Northern California, particularly the San Francisco Bay Area in 1989. The earthquake was measured at 7.1 on the Richter scale and resulted in widespread damage, including severe failure of the Bay Bridge and the collapse of the Cypress freeway structure. Mount Loma Prieta is located in the Santa Cruz Mountains near the pacific coast of California. It is the largest peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains with an elevation of 3,791 feet (1,155.5 meters).
