Late news

Adam looked at Edith in complete disbelief. As well as being shocked by the never-ending series of events he was caught up in, he was also embarrassed to have been caught not listening.

For Adam, it was an embarrassment he'd had to learn to live with.

But Mr Hewson? The same Mr Hewson who'd owned the newsagent shop since before he'd been a paperboy?

He recalled the friendly face of the man who used to sort out the papers for his round, the kindly man who'd seemed willing to turn a blind eye to the petty pilfering of Adam and his mates.

Seeing his confusion, Edith said "I know, son. It came as a shock to me, I can tell you. But Molly - sorry, your gran - told us that she had her suspicions about Bob Hewson. She was pretty convinced he was involved in this somehow - but it looks like he's the one who's in charge."

"In charge of what, though?" exclaimed Adam, becoming exasperated.

Edith started to reply, looking ready to match his annoyance. Alice however, raised her hand slightly, silencing her.

"Adam," she said. "You recall I asked you earlier if you believed in witches?"

He nodded.

"Well, how do you feel about religion?"
