A Heart of Broken Crayons

Tortillas

The Guatemalan girl in the photo is named Maria, and she and her sister helped the father run the tienda, or the store. We became friends with them because our team had to borrow their bathroom all the time. Maria told some of us girls that you're not considered a woman until you can make a tortilla. She was fourteen! She attempted to teach us how to make tortillas, and we quickly found out that we are not women based on Guatemalan standards. The American girls in the picture are my friends Mary and Christina.
