Homeless Aid

This piece of artwork is on the bank of the Boyne near the town centre, here in Drogheda and covers much of the history of the town.
Starting on the left, it features the Star and Crescent which is the emblem of the town. The Crescent is said to be a symbol of thanks to the Turkish people who sent ships laden with supplies to the town when it was under siege by Cromwell around 1640. Then we have the Boyne itself carrying a Viking longship, many of which landed here in Viking times. I often forget that Dublin, itself, was a Viking settlement originally. Then we have the great mythical figure of The Salmon of Knowledge followed by the railway viaduct, the greatest engineering feat of it's time and lastly the new bridge, which is only yards from where I was standing, representing "the road ahead".
Made by the workshop of Drogheda Homeless Aid in 2004, I'm sure thousands of people pass it weekly without noticing it. Worth a look sometime!
