I'm not yet sure whether this bit of railway-turned-cycle-path is useful or not. Whilst it only shaves a few seconds at most of the journey to or from work or into the city centre it does permit an extra half-kilometre to be walked along not-road, with the usual reductions in noise and smell, including the counter-introduction of an unidentified plant-smell which immediately made me think of one of the DofE training-walks undertaken about eighteen years ago through the fields between Louth and Horncastle. Whereas dogshit on the path is always a risk on any cycle path anywhere there does seem to be a little bit more on this path's tributaries and exit ramps than the similar paths to the west, which also generally go between more useful places and have significantly better surfaces. Whilst there does seem to be an established ned-presence along the path I haven't yet spotted any large piles of needlessly smashed bottles, though this is possibly just because the decreased usefulness of the path as a shortcut or traffic-avoidance route resulting in a decreased amount of cyclists has been perceived by the ned which has then calculated that the investment required to create sufficient amounts of scattered glass fragments is too great for the potentially infrequent possibility of payoff. Another potential decrease in path-usefulness of this particular route is that it takes the user travelling westwards to the city centre past an association football performance arena, presumably mostly always silent at times of travel to and from work but potentially occupied at weekends and other times of random wander and possibly not something to want to end up wandering past when accidentally wearing what might be perceived as the wrong colour. This has occasionally happened in the past at weekends near the city's other stadia and whilst it has never resulted in any damage to anyone it's unpleasant and unsettling to be unable to walk around wearing something which was only purchased for the design's pleasing lack of elasticated cuffs but which only happened to be available in one colour in the correct size and was an appropriate weight for the time of year but which happens to be vaguely similar in hue to the chosen uniform of a sports team playing as the opposition to a local sports team in the area through which I happened to be walking without apparently warranting drunken jeers and what might have been meant to be a vaguely threatening look had the eyes' owner not been incapable of fine motor control. Fortunately most of my clothings are drab and colourless but come winter I'll have to start remembering (possibly by sticking a small label inside them) not to wear particular items when planning on wandering in particular directions.
