Werribee River

A view of the Werribee River which rises in mountains to the west of Melbourne. On its course it has carved an impressive Gorge (Werribee Gorge 40 kms west of Melbourne near the township of Bacchus Marsh) that reveals ancient rock formations up to 400 million years aged. The River, by this time very subdued, passes through the large outer Melbourne suburb of of Werribee before emptying into Port Phillip Bay. There are a number of places along the River that offer great natural beauty and ruggedness, whilst other parts have been much abused through Dams and diversions, since European settlement.
