Bassae Frieze - detail

A trip to the British Museum leads to this hidden treasure displayed around the four walls of a small room (tucked away up a staircase in a quiet corner of the Greek history area). Originally sited in the Temple of Apollo in Bassae, the frieze was mounted 7m above the floor.
At eye level it depicts the Greeks, led by Herakles, fighting the Amazons, as he sought the belt of the mythical Queen Hipolyte.
