Coal Hole Art

Walking down the High Street this evening in the drizzle, I came upon this fine coal hole cover, manufactured by J. Every of Lewes, a company that operated from the foundry at the riverside Phoenix Works during the 1930s. The ironworks closed in the 1970s.

For such a utilitarian object it is delightfully decorative, and I noticed several similar covers fronting other properties on the street.
