From Across the Pond...

Happiest day of the year

Everyone is subdued from the giant bucket of KFC we shared in celebration, but today Bongani got his driver's license AND Thobela was awarded an 18-month technical learnership at ADT. Bongs was slapping his belly in amazement for how much chicken he just put away. This was his fourth attempt at the license and he finally nailed it. I have tried my best to help Thobela from the day I arrived here, and this was the second time I twisted arms to get him an interview for this program. I had recommended him for a part-time position with our IT guys at the end of last year, and although that contract ended fairly quickly it provided him with a valuable foundation in technical skills. He scored much higher on the assessment test this time around, and we spent about a week preparing for the interview itself. It was a long nervous morning waiting outside in the car that day (4 interviews in a row, over 3 hours straight) but he made it. He was the only black candidate out of 30. This program will provide him with a license and a boatload of training and certifications to install alarm and other networked security systems. Ideally he will be hired full time to deliver those services in the township communities, which will be perfect for him. Either way he will have a resume now and legitimate training to take him where he wants to go. I will go home happy now no matter what else happens.
