White Lipped Banded Snail Cepaea hortensis

We have a long mixed hedge that runs along one side of the garden, every time it rains hundreds of snails of several types emerge. The white lipped banded snail is active between March and October, for the remainder of the year they hibernate, the colour of the shell can be very variable - from plain to fully striped. The Dark Lipped Banded Snail (Cepaea nemoralis) is a similar species to the one shown above, but - surprise surprise - it has a dark lip around the entrance to its shell.
