The Lord Provost's Lamps

A Lord Provost in Scotland (Mayor of the town) has erected, from the Public Purse a fine set of Municipal lamps outside his house. This quaint custom has survived since time immemorial, or least since the introduction of gaslight. I do not think they had flaming torches before then but who knows!
