Glacier on College Fjord

This tidewater glacier is located in College Fjord which was named and mapped by the Harriman Expedition in 1899. The expedition included E.H. Harriman, his son Averell, H.T. Grosvenor, founder of the National Geographic Society, and naturalist John Muir.

Glaciers here were named after institutions of higher learning (the Ivy League and Seven Sisters), symbolizing the class and pedigrees of those who could afford the time and expense to travel so far.

Glaciers grind up lots of rock as they carve their way to the water, causing the dark appearance. This glacier is a tidewater glacier that travels to the water. Hanging glaciers hang above and don't touch the water.
