This is the South end of The School Bench, including the view of the top tiles as we face northwards toward the schoolyard and buildings. You can also see the right arm and hand of the Storyteller. Rosa Parks Elementary School tile 1:

School opens September 1997. 1500
students from kindergarten through 5th
grade enroll, exceeding the target
enrollment of 900.

COLLABORATIVE begins September 1998.
The San Diego State University College of
Education is in charge of academics in
partnership with Price Charities, and the San
Diego Unified School District and the San
Diego Education Association, the teachers
union. Rosa Parks is a professional
development school where a broad
spectrum of fundamental academic and
non-academic issues is addressed.

SCHOOL IN THE PARK begins September
1999. All 3rd, 4th and 5th graders spend an
average of 20% of the school year attending
school at museums in Balboa Park. This
innovative program is the first in the nation
with teachers and museum educators
collaborating to create the curriculum.

Rosa Parks is established as a
'COMMUNITY SCHOOL", involving families,
health care providers and the community in
support of children. Parents volunteer
thousands of hours every year.

It's a learning environment for students and
a neighborhood endeavor to serve the
whole community.

and community members together with the
San Diego Police Department to make the
neighborhood a safer place.

the highest increase in California State test
scores in the San Diego school district.
