Still at St Deiniols in North Wales....

As a great fan of M R James (Ghost Stories of an Antiquary 1904) - I think that he would have loved this room. He used to talk about "the north end of the graveyard" as a place of great spiritual desolation and dark happenings.

The north end of the graveyard was considered the Devil's domain - and it was reserved for the unbaptised, suicides, and any strangers unlucky enough to die on the way through the community.

Suicides were not even allowed to be brought in the church gate - and if they were to be buried even in this dismal consecrated ground, would be lifted over the church wall.

So in my room here, when the church clock strikes midnight, one can never be sure whether that deep moaning sound is......
