Transplanting a Saguaro Cactus

I was astounded to learn that it is possible to transplant a 2000 pound Saguaro Cactus. I was really astounded at the minimal size of the root ball.

This is the way it is done:
Truck backs up to the plant.
Cradle is on a hydraulic ram.
Plant is attached using old carpet for padding.
Plant is "roped" to the cradle.
Roots are cut with spades and axes. (Normal rood structure is very shallow, only a few inches, but extends outward in all directions a distance equal to the height of the cactus)
Almost the entire root structure is pruned.
Ram lifts the plant clear of the ground.
Cradle is then tipped into the position as shown in this photo and the plant is ready for transport.
In the new location, the process is reversed.
Then the plant is propped in position with 2 x 4's.
Most plants survive.
Going price for Saguaro Cactus is $100 per foot. A 10 ft tall plant will cost about $1,000.

I guarantee that you will do a double-take the first time you see a Saguaro Cactus driving down the Highway!
