They're red, but they ain't large

These are Large Red Damselflies. The name is slightly misleading - they are only 36mm long. However, everything's relative; the Small Red Damselfly is a mere 31mm long.

I spend so much time peering through a camera looking at insects that I forget how small they really are.

These two aren't actually mating, as such. The male (at the front) has hold of the female behind her head. When the actual fertilisation is taking place, the female loops her tail round to meet the rear of the male's thorax (the fat bit of his body).

They make a kind of heart shape, which is nice to look at but appears rather uncomfortable for the female.
