roots and wings

a coworker of mine uses government funding to do habitat restoration projects on private land, so today we went to the turtle lake club to see if a project might be possible on their land. i had never heard of this club before today, but i now understand it is relatively well known. a hunting club for the extremely wealthy (think car company CEOs) where the 19 members have free run of 25,000 acres. old growth forests, 5 lakes, miles upon miles of river to canoe, a renowned morel patch, or as i now think of it ? 25000 acres of heaven. one member told me stories of one weekend each year when the members come to hunt morels, and all of the courses of all of their meals would involve those tasty mushrooms. think steak stuffed with morels. i could not count the number of deer i saw, but more notable was a sighting of one of the hundreds of bear that roam the place! after ogling over the property and determining the basics of what could be done there, we sat down to lunch in the beautiful old log clubhouse. 6 pieces of silverware lined my place, a bell on the table called the help when we wanted anything else, and photos of 126 years worth of club presidents lined the walls. after a few hours there, i could not help but wish to banish the wealthy hunters and move with all of the LVs into their cabins along the lake. needless to say, i am sad my camera was not with me thus i have no photos of this stunning place to share with you. this orange lichen will have to do.
