Under glass

I only noticed this for the first time the other day; it must be one of the few parts of the St James Centre not to be made out of concrete.

It appears to be an old piece of stone with St James's Square 1779 carved into it. Presumably it's a remnant of whatever was on the site before the grim shopping centre that stands there now.

I'm thinking of starting a blip-series of bits of old Edinburgh preserved under glass ... unless, of course, I run out of ideas after the other two things I can think of. In which case, it'll be a very short series.
