Date Palm Grove

The Coachella Valley (the Palm Springs area) is made up of three things:

Desert and arid mountains.

Date palm groves.

Golf courses.

I think it has been established that most are not interested in the golf courses. And I promised Miss RAble that I would post something that didn't contain a golf course. So, here is a glimpse of a few date palms and grove.

The Coachella Valley is the most prominent date growing region in the United States, and is responsible for 95 percent of the nation's date crop.

Growing dates in the Valley began in 1890 when the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) imported date palm shoots from Iraq and Egypt. Additional palm shoots from Algeria were planted in 1903 through 1912. The area's entire date industry can be traced back to these originals.

Date groves were grown from present-day Cathedral City in the west of the valley to the Salton Sea, but most date groves have been replaced by development by the 1990s. Today, nearly all the date groves are in the "East Valley" area south of Indio, near Coachella and east of La Quinta where we are now.
