I have just read this article in New Scientist vital fruit and berry collection set for destruction. About the world's largest repository of fruits and berries located nr St Petersburg could be bulldozed to make way for new homes. Scientists are calling for intervention to stop this huge loss of crop diversity. Russia's leaders so far have not responded. As one scientist stated it will be a major tragedy if the collection is lost. These genetic resources will be vital to breeders as climate change takes a hold and food production moves north.

When will political leaders and policy makers come to appreciate we cannot live on bricks and mortar alone?
