San Jose State University Tower

In 2010, Tower Hall located on the oldest State university campus in California celebrated its 100th birthday. Construction began on Tower Hall in 1908, and according to California historical records, it was completed on August 31, 1910. It is the first structure of its type that was designed with reinforced concrete and steel. Supposedly, designed to withstand an earthquake (the San Francisco 1906 earthquake occurred 2 years prior to its start of construction), and fire.

Being the oldest state "normal" school building, it is designated a "historical landmark." Although the tower has had numerous renovations and maintenance adjustments through the years. Most if not all have been internal so as to preserve its Spanish architecture.

"Upon Tower Hall's completion, the building was welcomed enthusiastically, being noted as a demonstration for the possibilities inherent in cement ornamentation..." Spartan Daily

Completed on Aug. 31, 1910, Tower Hall cost $325,994 and to date is the oldest building on campus..." Spartan Daily

"During Rush week for Tau Delta Phi, a chair and plank can usually be seen protruding from the Tower Hall's bell tower, marking a tradition for the fraternity that dates back many years..." Spartan Daily

I have attempted to capture a photo of the plank and chair, noting that it hasn't been out this year, (quite precarious, although no one sits in it). I have found that the fraternity has been told they can no longer place the plank and chair on the tower during rush week as it presents a fire hazard.

Graduation at SJSU was last month, and an attempt was made to take a photo then, but with banners and temporary grandstands, it did not lend itself to a respectful photograph of the structure.

This is my Alma mater and a tribute to a state university providing many great names with an array of parchment papers.
