If you have a peat right, the energy and the time (I have none of the three) you can cut enough peat to keep the fire going for a year. This peat bank is in the hills above the village and is cut regularly each year.

The peat in this picture is now drying out before it is collected and stored in a few weeks time.

I don't think there is so much peat cutting going on these days as there was when I was first in Shetland and there is now industrial cutting as well. There is nothing better than walking past a house that has a peat fire on a cold windless winters evening.
