what a day

Municipal flowers

In the late 1970s, when we moved to this town, the authorities had just started the process of demolishing terraced housing, mills and streets in order to construct a hideous dual-carriageway through the middle. We can now see that it was a disaster because, as well as the destruction of people's homes and factories, it cut the town in two, making it very difficult for pedestrians to get from one side to the other.
Some time later, a local organisation, using volunteers, took it upon themselves to brighten our lives and started to install flower tubs all along the dual carriageway. This year, because of a lack of volunteers, the Town Council took over the job and they have taken to it with gusto. No doubt, local government cut-backs will mean that next year will be very different, so we must enjoy them while we can.
