Dem Bones, Dem Bones, Dem Dry Bones...

Backblip (the fifth of many to cover ten days holiday):

As promised in yesterdays blip I can now reveal the source of the skull souvenir brought back from the Czech Republic...it was the Sedlec Ossuary.

Our trip today was by train out of Prague to visit to Kutna Hora in which the Ossuray is located (also an excellent Silver mine and Cathedral). The train trip was most welcome as, much like the Prague Metro in was cheap, efficient and cool.

The Ossuary is both macabre and surreal (particularly the Cherubs on top of the columns of skulls). The inside is decorated with the bones from an estimated 40,000 to 70,000 people arranged into such decorative items as the chandelier shown here. Also featured are monstrances, chalices and even a Coat or Arms for the Schwarzenberg family (who paid for much of the work) all made out of bones! I felt rather nervous walking around as I was convinced I would knock something and be engulfed in an avalanche of bones.

If you are not squeamish try viewing this in large!!!
